Have you ever known that you needed to do something but you kept putting it off because you knew you wouldn’t enjoy doing it?

Maybe there was something you needed to fix but the thought of doing it was enough to make you want to run in the other direction.

I had that experience recently.

I have some hedges between my back yard and my next door neighbour.

They are my hedges so they are my responsibility to maintain.

I just felt it would be tedious and annoying so I kept putting it off.

To make matters worse, the house next to me is derelict as the man who lived there died a couple of years ago and the family are still trying to sort things out.

This meant that I didn’t feel any pressure from my neighbour to get the hedges sorted; not that I should have needed it.

So, I kept putting the job on the long finger.

This week, I decided that I had enough of it.

So, I went and got some petrol for my hedge trimmer and tuned the trimmer up.

Then, I started the trimmer up and started cutting.

Within a minute, I experienced a major surprise - I was actually enjoying it.

I was like a boy with his toy, going a bit mad with a hedge trimmer; waving it like Luke Skywalker with his light saber.

In fact, I got so carried away that I failed to notice as I cut through my clothes line (oops!).

It made me wonder what else I put off by convincing myself that I won't enjoy it.

If you allow it to, your mind will tell you every manner of nonsense; so much so that it is often best ignored.

We all need to stop taking our thoughts so seriously,

So, if there is something you are putting off, just make a start and stay relaxed about it.

You may find it more enjoyable than you thought and, even if you don’t, you will gain a great deal of satisfaction from getting it done.
